About 95.5% of local students benefiting from the free school system during the 2021/2022 school year

A total of 107 schools are currently covered by the Macao SAR free school system, accounting for 75,000 students or 95.5% of the total, the Bureau of Education and Youth Development (DSEDJ) said.

As the start of the 2021/2022 school year approaches, and taking into account the pandemic risks that still exist, the DSEDJ will communicate closely with the establishments and schools the modalities of courses and epidemic prevention.

In-person non-tertiary education classes will be allowed to resume on September 1 as scheduled, students, teachers, and school staff studying or working in Macau are expected to return to the SAR – or their usual residence in Zhuhai or Zhongshan for students cross-border – 14 days before the resumption of lessons.

All students, teachers, and non-tertiary staff who have been outside of Macau, Zhuhai, or Zhongshan after August 6 – as well as those who have lived with them – will need to be tested five days before class resumes within six city test centers between Aug 27 and 31.

Schools have also been recommended to cancel or postpone recent gathering activities and outing exchange activities to reduce the risk of transmission of the virus, as initiatives are advanced to help residents between the ages of 12 and 19. to get vaccinated.

The DSEDJ also asked schools to pay attention to the relevant provisions of the recent national flag and emblem regulations, reminding them to pay particular attention to the place and day when the national flag is displayed or displayed, and the time at which the national flag is raised and lowered.

Recent amendments to the National Flag Law and the National Emblem Law of the People’s Republic of China by the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress were also enacted in Macao SAR on January 1, 2021.

The enacted amended national flag law requires schools – except during school holidays – to hoist the national flag every day, and schools should also hold a flag raising ceremony once a week, unless there is a holiday.

Kindergartens and nurseries should follow these stipulations to also hoist the flag, if conditions permit.
